Description:  

SEIU-UHW West is a progressive, action-orientated union of 140,000 healthcare workers whose mission is to change the lives of healthcare workers and to win universal access to quality healthcare for all.

From our Oakland office, the editor develops, coordinates and communicates news and information through UHW's member-oriented publications to inform and mobilize members and recognize their hard work. Internal communications, especially our Unity magazine, plays an essential role in meeting these objectives and reinforcing the union's work to improve workers' lives and conditions for their patients.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop content ideas for Unity—our quarterly membership magazine—in collaboration with directors
  • Organize, write, edit and produce stories for Unity magazine, division newsletters and staff newsletters
  • Coordinate the production of our annual State of the Union publication
  • Take and select photographs and illustrations to document member activity
  • Build and maintain working relationships with directors, field staff and others
  • Occasionally conduct writing and photography training sessions for staff and members
  • Assist with other internal communications projects as needed

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice
  • Must be a strong writer with a solid record of editorial output
  • Proven ability to set and meet production schedules working with both internal staff resources and outside vendors
  • Skilled photographer/photojournalist
  • Knowledge of magazine layout and design
  • Fully rounded desktop publishing experience essential, including proficiency with Quark Xpress, InDesign and Word.
  • Well spoken, with excellent creative and interpersonal communication skills
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including weekends as needed
  • Ability to perform under pressure and maintain a calm presence
  • Assist in crafting an aggressive and effective media outreach plan that envisions use of printed and spoken word, web, video and other media
  • Labor movement or progressive advocacy experience preferred
  • Multilingual skills preferred
